New facilities that inspire collaboration and student achievement

Two new state of the art facilities opened in fall 2025, marking the TDSB’s first newly built schools since 2019. Together, these buildings reflect a commitment to creating bright, modern, and inclusive learning environments designed to support the needs of today’s students.

Bloor Collegiate Institute: Alpha II Alternative

The new Bloor CI and Alpha II Alternative School building opened to students in September 2025, becoming the TDSB’s first new secondary school since 2019. The four storey, 125,000 square foot facility offers a bright, modern, and student focused environment in the heart of downtown Toronto and was built by Snyder Architects and Percon Construction.

This year also marks the 100th anniversary of Bloor CI. “It’s amazing to see this incredible new building come to life,” said Principal Janice Gladstone. “It’s a space where students can feel inspired and connected. When you walk into the airy, bright atrium and students are there in small clusters, the scene is picture perfect. The modern labs, arts facilities, gym, and outdoor amenities provide Bloor CI students spaces to experiment and collaborate. Our new school truly gives students and staff a place to learn, achieve, build memories, and thrive together for years to come.”

A key milestone was the implementation of Procedure PR743 – Employee Interim Measures Pending Investigation, which, along with an enhanced focus on employee health, wellness, and abilities, contributed to substantial operational improvements. Collectively, these efforts resulted in budgetary savings exceeding $10 million.

Dennis Avenue Community School

Dennis Avenue Community School also opened to students in September 2025, having been built by Architect MCA and Everstrong Construction. The three-storey building accommodates 358 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 and includes a five-room childcare centre that supports families in the community. Outdoor spaces feature a playground structure, basketball nets, and a multi-use sports field that promote active play and physical well-being. Inside, students benefit from a bright, colourful gym on the second floor and a double height learning commons that serves as a central hub for reading, collaboration, and inquiry-based learning.
