Enriching learning through creative expression.

Student holding up art work

The TDSB Arts Department plays a vital role in advancing the Multi-Year Strategic Plan. Through dynamic programming, professional learning, and resource development, the Arts Department empowers educators, engages families, and enriches student learning across K-12.

Building strong foundations

From Kindergarten onward, the Arts Department supports the development of literacy and numeracy through integrated arts learning. Programs such as Kindergarten: Arts and the Natural World and the Primary Outdoor Living Things STEAM Crate connect movement, storytelling, and creativity with early literacy and numeracy expectations, ensuring that TDSB students build a solid foundation for future success.

Excellence through belonging

Central to our work is the creation of resources and classrooms that reflect the diverse lived experiences of TDSB students.

Professional learning opportunities likethe Roots & Remix Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogical Choir Project and the Toolkits in the Arts empower educators to nurture belonging and respect in every learning space.

In the 2025 School Climate Survey for grades 4 to 12 students, 83% of students indicated they see their identity positively shown in books and materials teachers use in class either all the time or sometimes.

Expanding access and enrichment

With over 1,200 professional learning registrations in 2024-25, TDSB educators accessed 54 sessions in virtual, blended, and in-person formats. Participants consistently rated these sessions as engaging, practical, and transformative, with 80% reporting that the sessionshad a direct impact on their classroom practices and students’ sense of belonging.

Strengthening instructional practice

Professional learning emphasized evidence-based approaches, universal design for learning, and differentiated instruction. Workshops such as the Start with the Arts: ӰProCREATES Elementary Professional Learning and the Arts Mentor Network at Apple Canada provided both direct instructional strategies and inquiry-based pedagogies, equipping educators to foster creativity and critical thinking.

Families as partners

We recognize the essential role of parents, caregivers, and guardians as partners in student learning. Initiatives such the Arts for Joy Workshop engage families directly, fostering collaborative approaches that support student well-being, literacy, and the arts at home and in school.

Holding high expectations

Across all initiatives, we maintain high expectations for student achievement, supporting educators to set meaningful goals, monitor progress, and celebrate student growth.
