Overview

Project Address: 160 Silverhill Drive, Etobicoke, ON M9B 3W7

The ÐÓ°ÉPro is building a new elementary school and Child Care centre in central Etobicoke.  The new school will accommodate 823 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 and will include a five-room child care centre (88 spaces) for children from birth to age four. The school will be situated on the western portion of the site to preserve existing outdoor areas and to maximize play space.

The new Etobicoke City Centre Elementary School will be a three-storey modern facility which will include kindergarten classrooms, regular classrooms, full-sized gymnasium, library/learning commons, specialty program rooms (music, art, science), and dedicated child care spaces. The design will create a welcoming and engaging learning environment for students.

The existing Etobicoke Secondary Alternative School will be relocated in advance of project construction, and the existing building will be demolished.

The new school will alleviate enrollment pressures at nearby schools by providing much-needed new pupil places in this rapidly growing community.

Background

Central Etobicoke is experiencing rapid residential growth, including many new developments in the Etobicoke City Centre area. Neighbourhood schools such as Wedgewood Junior School and others have seen increasing enrollment pressures. To address the long-term accommodation needs, the TDSB retained the Silverhill property (the site of the former Cloverdale Junior School) as a location for a future new school. In October 2023 TDSB submitted a business case for a new elementary school and child care centre on this site.

The project was approved by the Ministry of Education as part of the 2023/2024 Capital Priorities program.

Objectives

Once completed, the school community and residents will benefit from the following:

  • Increased Student Capacity: A brand new JK-8 school for 823 students, helping to accommodate growth and alleviate overcrowding in surrounding schools.
  • Integrated Child Care: A five-room child care centre (88 spaces) on site, providing convenient early learning and care for families in the community.
  • Modern Learning Environment: New, purpose-built classrooms and support spaces designed for 21st-century learning, including a library learning commons, art and science rooms, and technology-enabled learning spaces.
  • State-of-the-Art Gymnasium: A full-sized gym with change rooms and equipment to support physical education programming and community sports use after hours.
  • Fully Accessible Design: A barrier-free school building, complete with an elevator serving all floors, accessible washrooms, and ramps/automatic doors at entrances facilitating barrier free movement throughout the facility.
  • Outdoor Play and Learning: Enhanced outdoor areas, including dedicated kindergarten play yards, secure play areas for the child care, and a larger hard-surface play area and field for students. Site design will support both school and community outdoor education and recreational use.
  • Sustainable Features: A modern, energy-efficient building design that meets Toronto Green Standards, with improved insulation, high-efficiency HVAC systems, LED lighting, and on-site stormwater management.

Project Updates

  • Spring 2025: The design phase is progressing toward completion. The Concept Site Plan application has been submitted and is currently under review by the City of Toronto.
